If camera movement tracking is unstable, fix the setup—not your range
Before moving farther, improve face lighting, device stability, camera position, and neutral calibration. Your body should not compensate for tracking errors.
When a movement game loses tracking, the instinct is often to move farther and faster. Reverse that order: improve what the camera can see, recalibrate, and keep the physical movement gentle. A technical problem should not become a demand on your body.
Short answer: stabilize the device, put the camera close to the front of your body, light your face without a bright background, and sit at a distance where your full face is visible without craning forward. Refresh and recalibrate. Never throw the head or chase maximum range just to be detected.
First: keep the device still
A laptop moving on the knees, a handheld phone, or a vibrating surface changes the camera reference continuously. Put a computer on a stable surface and secure a phone in a stand. Do not run a camera-controlled movement game in a moving vehicle.
Second: put useful light on the face
A window or strong lamp behind you can make the face too dark for reliable detection. Turn the setup or partly close the curtain so light arrives from the front or front-side. Avoid using the display as the only light, and do not aim a bright lamp into the eyes.
Third: bring the camera toward the front
An off-center camera can make your natural position look turned already. Move the game window to the camera display and face it with the torso. In a dual-screen setup, temporarily make the camera display the primary screen.
Fourth: see clearly before calibration
Adjust distance and text so you can read without moving the head forward. During calibration, use a natural middle position that allows ordinary breathing. Do not brace the chest or force the chin backward. Calibration defines your starting point; it does not grade posture.
The MediaPipe Face Detector web API runs detection on video frames. Lighting, apparent face size, and device performance can all affect live results. A missed detection is not a physical failure.
A useful troubleshooting order
- End the current round and return to a natural position.
- Stabilize the device and improve light on the face.
- Close another meeting app that may be using the camera.
- Refresh, grant permission again if needed, and recalibrate.
- If tracking remains unstable, use the no-camera preview instead of increasing movement.

Physical signals always outrank tracking
Stop immediately for pain, dizziness, numbness, nausea, or another unusual sensation. Do not label a symptom as “calibration not finished.” Unstable tracking may require a different environment or mode; it never requires risking comfort to complete a target. On an older device that cannot keep up, choose the preview instead of speeding up to chase the display.
